The Common Application is a not-for-profit membership organization that has been around for over 30 years! It provides online applications to over 400 memeber colleges and universities.
CFNC is a free service of the state of North Carolina that helps students plan, apply, and pay for college. Most North Carolina schools, whether public or private, two-year or four-year, will be on this site. Though CFNC services are free, college application fees set by four year colleges/universities still apply. Some colleges/universities waive application fees during College Application Month in November.
Individual College Websites
If your college is not on the CFNC or Common Application websites, their application will be on their individual website. You will create an account, then follow their instructions for admission.
The Coalition application partners with 113 colleges and universities to provide college application help tools. There is also an interactive "locker", where students can store assignments starting their freshman year.
All students going to college in North Carolina must complete Residency Determination via www.cfnc.org. Every student must have a CFNC account in order to complete this. Students will not have to go straight to the RDS site to complete this as some college applications will have the link in the application. BUT it will still use the same login as the student has created in CFNC.
Many applications will ask for Letters of Recommendation. When asking a teacher, coach, or counselor to write one for you, make sure that you ask them AT LEAST 2 weeks in advance. If you are applying to college through Common App and requesting a recommendation from a Northwest teacher, you will request the letter through NAVIANCE. Make sure your resume in Naviance is up to date for your teacher to see when writing your letter for you.
Many 4 year Colleges will ask for a short or long Essay. These essays are a chance to show your personality! Make sure you are open and honest; tell a story that only YOU can tell. It is also a good idea to ask an English teacher to proofread you essay. Again, make sure to ask them at least 2 weeks in advance!
